Music stirs up precious memories for Elstow resident Graham

Delighted residents at Elstow Manor Care Home were thrilled to invite community band, the Flitwick Flukes, to their home to play a whole host of classical songs.

The ‘Brew Monday’ event was extra special for Elstow Manor resident Graham Edginton, aged 96, who was reminded about the day he watched the famous George Formby live on stage.

Formby, a singer-songwriter, actor, and comedian, was best known for playing the Banjolele, which is similar to the ukulele several band members play.

Graham, aged 73, even got his own guitar out so he could play along. He said: “It was one of the best afternoons at Elstow Manor, and it was great to hear the members play the ukulele.”

Brew Monday is a campaign spearheaded by The Samaritans encouraging people to reach out to others over a tasty cuppa.

Elstow Manor Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Oliver Waddington said: “We wanted to turn the day into a positive one using the community band and afternoon tea.”

The Flitwick Flukes, founded in 2016, includes 13 members. Initially founded as a ukulele group, the band welcomes players of almost any instrument.

Graham added: “What a memorable day, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing along on my guitar with Flitwick Flukes.”

During the very special afternoon at Elstow Manor, everyone also enjoyed some delicious tea and cake made by the home’s catering team. The spread included caramelised biscuit cake, lemon poppy cake and Victoria sponge.
