Devoted musician and Cambridge Grove resident Mary Simpson was delighted when a visiting professional entertainer tuned up and played her treasured mandolin.
Mary, aged 85, has played the instrument since she was six years old and has a collection of about seven amazing mandolins.
She was keen that Sean Moyses, known as The Banjo Man, got a chance to see her precious mandolin when he visited Cambridge Grove to entertain residents.
He was thrilled when Mary handed him the precious piece that was given to her by her uncle nearly 80 years ago.
After tuning the instrument, he played the Lady of Spain, which is a popular song that was composed in 1930.
Mary said: “I have always loved my mandolin, and it’s a huge pleasure to hear someone else play it. It sounds wonderful.”
As a child, Mary had lessons every Sunday morning where she lived in Nottingham and went on to play in a community band. Today, although she has several mandolins, her uncle’s gift to her is her most precious.
Sean was delighted that Mary had trusted him to handle the treasured piece.
He added: “This is very special for me, Mary. Your mandolin is over 100 years old. Thank you for trusting me with it.”
