Favourite Characters Come to Life at Upton Manor Care Home

Oliver Twist, James and the Giant Peach and The Great Escape have been hailed as some of the best books ever by keen bookworms at Upton Manor Care Home.

Residents couldn’t wait to share their thoughts about a range of books on World Book Day (March 6) – with some people enjoying an excursion to their local library.

The group of avid readers picked out a range of new books to borrow from Upton Library, Corner House, whilst spending the day talking about their most loved literature.

Resident Joan, who worked in a Kingston Lacey bookshop when she was just 16, said: “I have always loved books, and even a visit to the local library reminds me of the time I worked in a bookshop.

“Books open a whole new world up to people, and it can be very exciting.”

Meanwhile, fellow resident Roger is an enthusiastic reader of crime books and made himself very comfortable in the crime section of the library.

Also, during the day, Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Erin Butcher and Upton Manor Activities Assistant Elaine Hall dressed up as popular book characters, Snow White and an Oompa Loompa from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Erin said: “We have a lot of keen readers here at Upton Manor, and many of us like to talk a lot about the books we enjoy, whilst others just delve into another world and engross themselves.

“On World Book Day we opened the discussion and talked about the books we all love, and Oliver Twist, James and the Giant Peach and The Great Escape featured highly.

“It’s been wonderful sharing book tips and making recommendations to one another. It was also great fun dressing up, and we certainly surprised a few residents with our costumes!”
