Two residents at Verwood House Care Home reflected on their caring careers when they celebrated International Nurses Day.

Ninety-year-old Eunice Whipp worked as a nurse for more than 30 years, specialising in general nursing in the Salisbury area.

She said: “I loved meeting new people all the time and helping them the very best way I could. I really loved the job.

“You do need good people skills and you obviously have to be compassionate and professional.”

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world on May 12 and is the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. The idea is to shine a light on the incredible work of nurses.

Fellow resident Brenda Lawrence, aged 88, worked as a nurse for around 10 to 12 years, and during this time she worked as a midwife and later general nursing.

She said: “I loved seeing and helping people and I was good friends with all my workmates. I could not have worked in an office, and I always liked keeping busy, job satisfaction was high.”

Verwood’s Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Emilia Turner said: “Whilst the day celebrates nursing around the world and showcasing how important they are to the good health of nations; at Verwood it was lovely to say thank you to our own nursing team but also to recognise the care that Brenda and Eunice offered over so many years.”

Eunice and Brenda were each presented with a Hamberley water bottle, much appreciated as the weather heats up.
