Receptionist Annette Samson plays a pivotal role at Verwood House Care Home – she’s always got a big smile and something kind to say residents, staff and guests.
So, when Annette heard about the Hamberley National Poetry competition, she was desperate to express her thanks to the carers she works with every day.
Devoted Annette said:
“I love my job on reception, greeting everyone and making sure we are very well organised.
“And because of my position, I see everything going on around me. Every day I see a huge amount of love and care for our wonderful residents and guests.
“I think the carers here are just amazing, they put the residents first, above everything else.
“I chose my words carefully for the poem as I wanted the tribute to be appropriate and reflect the incredible work they do.”
In her poem Annette wrote:
“I watch, and I listen to all of their stories. Whether they are true or just in their mind. To appreciate their lives and all they have done. Makes us all very special and kind.”
Annette, a mother of three and grandmother to three young grandchildren, has worked at Verwood House as a receptionist for 18 months. Her responsibilities include meeting and greeting visitors, answering the phone, and performing administrative tasks.
In her poem she also wrote:
“To all of you people who work hard every shift, A true carer is so very rare. But we are very lucky to have each of you here Working for Hamberley Care.”

Verwood House Care Home that’s where I work
I get to know who is there day and night.
To see all the people and how happy they are
It is truly a wonderful sight.
I watch and I listen to all of their stories.
Whether they are true or just in their mind
To appreciate their lives and all they have done.
Makes us all very special and kind.
They will have good days and some days are bad
When they don’t know what’s happened in life
Where a kind word or hug can make things seem much better
Like we give to our husband or wife
The sight of them dancing when music is played
Or a smile when they all pass me by
As I pause to make chatter to brighten their day
Makes me question life just why oh why?
As I watch and I listen and learn so much more
I know a Carer I just couldn’t be
But thank goodness that there are such fine souls out there
Who will clean, dress and make cups of tea
To me Dementia carers you’re all very special
As that’s what I see day by day
The love and the care that is so very clear
You do all have a wonderful way
To all of you people who work hard every shift
A true carer is so very rare
But we are very lucky to have each of you here
Working for Hamberley Care
