Upton Manor Residents Climb On Board The Dolphin For Adventure

Adventurous Upton Manor Care Home residents braved the seas for a harbour boat trip adventure, enjoying tea and biscuits along the way!

The group joined a Friends of Dolphin cruise at Poole Quay and spent the afternoon on a grand sightseeing trip, enjoying views of Sandbanks and the islands of Brownsea, Furzy, and Arne.

And for resident Pamela Lester the trip brought back some very happy family memories.

Pamela, aged 86, said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed the Poole harbour cruise! The crew were so lovely, very friendly, and informative. I have been boating before as my family had a boat, and it brought back very happy memories.”

Fellow resident Irene Ellis, aged 93, added:

“What a lovely afternoon! I’ve never seen Brownsea Island before; the views are just beautiful!

“Thank you to all the crew for all the amazing work they do. I bought a mug, so I shall think of them every time I have a cup of tea!”

The Friends of Dolphin launched in 1979 as a special project by the Rotary Club of Parkstone to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Rotary International.

The Dolphin boats have been specially adapted to carry disabled people of all ages and disabilities. In 2017, the service was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.

On the day Upton Manor residents hopped on board, crew members Bill and Julia played host, making everyone feel comfortable and providing lots of great local information.

Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Amy Morrison added:

“The crew provided us with tea and biscuits as well as a guided tour of the harbour, wildlife, and history.

“We returned to Poole Quay after what can only be described as the best afternoon out!

It is amazing that the Friends of Dolphin rely solely on volunteers and donations to provide this fantastic disabled boat service, and we are very grateful for it!”

The Friends of Dolphin rely on donations and are always on the lookout for volunteers to help with fundraising and crew the Dolphin.
