Two former teachers were delighted to cut the celebratory ribbon to their first-floor luxury accommodation at Cambridge Grove Care Home.

Husband and wife, Barry and Val Grindrod, who have been married for more than 50 years, were cheered by staff when they officially declared the floor open.

Essex-born Val, who was presented with flowers, said:

“Thank you all so much, this is just wonderful. The balcony is beautiful, and we have such an amazing view of everywhere.”

The couple, who have two children and five grandchildren, were also thrilled and surprised to see all their amazing paintings and belongings so beautifully placed in their rooms.

Val and Barry originally moved from London to Hunstanton, Norfolk until they moved to Cambridge Grove where they still enjoy walking and the outdoors life.

The couple met through their teaching work. Val trained as a teacher and taught at a girls’ grammar school, teaching PE, French and Spanish and London-born Barry taught at the boys’ grammar school. He taught languages too but was also deputy head teacher.

Cambridge Grove Wellbeing Coach Amy Milburn said:

“Val and Barry were so excited and proud to be 'Duke and Duchess' of our First Floor and said it felt really spacious.

“The couple have glorious views from upstairs, and both are very keen to sit on the balcony with a hot chocolate! Val was literally jumping for joy, and there were happy tears too.

“It’s wonderful to have such an amazing couple here, and we look forward to seeing this become their much-loved home. We will build a truly incredible community here at Cambridge Grove.”

Barry and Val said they were looking forward to welcoming other new residents upstairs soon and can't wait to show them around.
