Avid knitter Jean of Charrington Manor Care Home was amazed when she won the top prize in an ‘Artist of the Year’ competition.
Jean, aged 90, entered her beautiful knitted hat in the Road World for Seniors event, which usually sees the nonagenarian cycling on famous routes.
Road Worlds for Seniors (RWS) launched the ‘Artist of the Year’ competition last year, asking entrants to use RWS as the theme.
Judges were so impressed with how perfectly Jean used the Road World for Seniors colours they awarded her the prize.
Jean said: “I am delighted, this is a huge surprise. I love cycling away and watching the videos as part of the activities - I didn’t expect to win a prize for my hat!”
When Jean is not cycling, she can be found knitting tiny hats for newborns, which she donates to the newborns at Ashford and St Peters’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Road Worlds for Seniors is set up to help older people and those living with dementia to take part in a global sporting event – from the comfort of their chairs. The championship combines physical activity as well as reminiscence.
Participants cycle to videos from the Motiview video library, which offers more than 2000 videos, giving people a chance to chat and reminisce as they pedal. The organisation has members from across the globe.
Charrington Manor Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Claudia Modiga said: “The videos and the cycling offer a great way to keep mind and body active. Everyone has a lot of fun.
“We were all very impressed by Jean’s enthusiasm to enter the art competition. She is usually busy knitting to help the babies, so it’s lovely that she has been recognised in this way.
“Jean looks super colourful in the hat and is certainly setting a new trend!”
