Former 999 operator takes emotional trip 'home' to Brampton address

Cherished memories of family life in Brampton’s Buckden Road came flooding back for tearful Pamela Walsh when she made an emotional trip ‘home’.

Pamela, aged 91, was visiting nearby Montague House Care Home when she asked if she could make the short walk to see the house where she and her late husband Peter brought their daughters up.

Amy Milburn, the Home Ambassador at Montague’s sister home, Cambridge Grove, where Pamela now lives, was happy to accompany her.

As Pamela surveyed the home where she and Peter enjoyed years of happiness with their daughters Jane and Paula, the former 999 Operator got tearful.

Pamela said: “I never expected to be able to come here again.

“I’m so very grateful to Amy for going that extra mile to take me to my old house. It was lovely to see it still in great condition and reminiscing with her on the day.”

During their visit, Pamela reminisced about moving to their Buckden Road house in 1971, the modifications they made, and her cheeky granddaughter locking her in the porch space to make mischief.

She and Peter, who died in 2017, used to love walking their two dogs down River Lane every day, where he helped out in the local plant nurseries until he was 84.

A few days later, Amy surprised Pamela with a framed photo of her outside the house during their visit on a beautifully sunny day.

Amy said, “I was so pleased to be able to take Pam to see her old house, where she made so many happy memories with her family.

“She has been very excited about visiting the area for a couple of weeks. The weather was in our favour, and we spent quite a while outside the house, with Pam telling me about the house and lots of stories.”

Happily, though, Pamela is now enjoying life 26 miles away at Cambridge Grove in Fulbourn, where she’s made lots of new friends.

Pamela said: “I never thought I could be happy again, but I love living at Cambridge Grove. Everyone is so wonderful and incredibly kind. I love being able to socialise and do things with other ladies and gents of similar ages. The activities they put on for us are brilliant.”

Cambridge Grove and Montague House are both part of the Hamberley Care Homes group, which offers exceptional residential, nursing, dementia and respite care within a luxury environment.
