As England football fans enjoyed the highs and lows of the Euros 2024, Caddington Grove resident Les was thrilled that the tournament brought everyone together to watch some sporting history.
Les has spent a lifetime attending matches and cheering on his own team Luton Town, so when the Euros came along, he couldn’t wait to watch everything on the big screen – and get others to join.
He said:
“It’s been an incredible season and just like everyone else we were all on the edge of our seats for the final.
“Of course, the greatest moment for me was the semi-finals when we played the Netherlands—a remarkable match.”
Les, aged 77, has got some great footie memories including the time he went to watch the match between Luton and Nottingham Forest back in 1959.
The 1959 FA Cup final was contested by Nottingham Forest and Luton Town at Wembley. Forest were playing in their second FA Cup final, while Luton were making their first final appearance in their history. Forest won 2–1 to win their second title, with goals from Roy Dwight and Tommy Wilson just four minutes apart.
The match suspense and atmosphere is something Les will never forget.

“When the England team were playing the Netherlands in the semi-final, the excitement was palpable. Les, took his place in front of the TV in the lounge room, surrounded by other residents and staff who had gathered to watch the game with him.
“As the match progressed, the tension in the room was electrifying. Les's eyes were glued to the screen, his face a canvas of emotions with every pass, tackle, and goal. When the final whistle blew, signalling England’s victory, the room erupted into cheers. But it was Les’s reaction that truly stole the moment.
“Tears welled up in his eyes as he watched England team winning the game. His hands trembled as he wiped away the tears, a radiant smile spreading across his face. The staff and residents shared in his joy, offering hugs and congratulations.
“Les's emotional reaction to the football team victory was a poignant reminder of the power of sport to bring joy and nostalgia, transcending age and circumstances. It was a beautiful sight to behold, witnessing a lifelong dream come true for someone so deserving.”
