The Eastleigh home has joined forces with Home Instead at Central Hampshire to host regular Singing for the Brain sessions. And new members are welcome!
Resident Dennis Ward, aged 96, said: “I like coming down to the singing. I like the songs and I like how the lady asks me, Dennis what shall we sing next? My answer is ‘My Way’ by Frank Sinatra.”
The group, led by local resident and care professional Suzie Mills and meets every other Thursday of the month.
Suzie has been part of the Home Instead team since 2013 and has a musical background that has been put into profound use by providing the Singing for the Brain sessions that are tailored to promote the wellbeing of people living with dementia and their carers.
Anne, who lives locally is delighted to have joined the group.
She said: “I am looking forward to coming to these gatherings. Me and my husband really enjoy the singing but also the conversations and the positive energy in general. Suzie is amazing, and she knows how to make things fun. I like when she does her dance moves.”
Singing for the Brain, is an initiative inspired by the Alzheimer’s Society, with the idea that it brings people affected by dementia together to sing a variety of songs they know and love, in a fun and friendly environment.
Groups also practice vocal exercises that help improve brain activity and wellbeing.
Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Lidia Nikolova Gjorgjieva added:
“Singing is so good for us, socially, physically and mentally. Our group invites the local community into our friendly home here at Alston House and together we can make each other feel good, have a laugh and also share our stories. Suzie is wonderful at bringing everyone together. Our voices rise and we create magic!”
