Everyone joined the fun and got down to some serious partying to mark the special day.

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12 and is the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth.

The International Council of Nurses commemorates this day each year with the production and distribution of International Nurses' Day resources and evidence.

Alston House Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Lidia Nikolova Gjorgjieva said: "We have an exceptionally dedicated nursing team here and everyone gives 110% to the job.

“People don’t always realise that they may not dress as superheroes, but nurses make a huge difference to many lives every day. They save lives every day.

“We wanted the day to be a real celebration, so staff members were encouraged to come to work dressed as superheroes which was very fun for the residents.

“In the afternoon we gathered in the bistro and played games that made the residents and staff members laugh and enjoy the time celebrating what they do.

“Our slogan of the day was ‘Not all superheroes wear capes, our heroes have stethoscopes, and we call them nurses.’”

This year the International Council of Nurses has launched a global campaign, Our Nurses. Our Future, which sets out what is needed for nursing in the future in order to address the global health challenges and improve global health for all.

Lidia: “Our nurses may not be invincible like characters we see in the films, but they are certainly lifesavers and demonstrate care, compassion, courage, communication, commitment and competence every day.”
