The Knitting Club was the very first club established at Alston House with one goal, to bring experienced knitters from the home together with skilful knitters from the community.
Now members meet every Wednesday morning when volunteer and local knitting enthusiast Pam visits to share her knowledge and skills.
Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Lidia Nikolova Gjorgjieva said: “It’s been very popular with residents, and now people from the local area are joining too, which adds to the fun.
“Members enjoy a cup of tea and as well as the sharing of ideas and enjoying each other’s company every Wednesday morning has become very joyful and successful.
“Everyone loves learning new stitches and new designs, and it’s the perfect social activity and a chance for some lovely conversation.”
Knitting is said to be one of the most calming activities and helps reduce stress and anxiety. The repetitive movement of weaving the yarn between the knitting needles or crochet hook can be very relaxing. Knitting also helps promote mindfulness and can reduce the risk of memory loss.
