Milngavie residents make sweet music together

Visiting music therapist Ian McTier coordinated the session and brought along various instruments to spark the imagination and get the creative juices flowing.

And it didn’t take long before residents were creating their own sounds and words.

Milngavie Manor’s Wellbeing and Lifestyle Coach Morag Scott said: “Music has this tremendous ability to make us all feel good.

“It can help relax us, as well as provide a powerful healing tool. Music can also help increase our mobility and coordination as well as helping us sleep better.”

Studies show that music promotes positive overall health. Generally, music therapists use songs with distinctive themes, lyrics, instruments, and rhythms to help participants relax.

This slows down the heart rate and lowers the level of the stress hormone cortisol. The effect causes seniors to feel calmer and physically more capable of relaxing.
